Neighbourhood guide

Short answer: Mohammadpur is an established residential area in west-central Dhaka, next to Dhanmondi and Lalmatia, with larger flats and lower rents than Gulshan. We currently have one listing here: a fully furnished, serviced three-bedroom apartment of about 2,000 sq ft at around BDT 100,000 a month.

What is it like to live in Mohammadpur?

Mohammadpur is one of Dhaka's older planned residential areas, west of Dhanmondi and close to Asad Gate and Mirpur Road. It is densely populated and very much a local neighbourhood, with a mix of older houses, newer apartment buildings, markets, schools and mosques. Streets range from busy main roads to calmer residential lanes, and the feel varies a lot from block to block.

Few foreign residents live here compared with Gulshan or Banani, so it suits people who want to be part of everyday Dhaka life, or whose work is in the west or centre of the city. English is less widely spoken in shops and markets than in Gulshan, so a few words of Bengali, or help from a driver or colleague, make daily errands easier. Domestic help and drivers are easy to find through building caretakers and neighbours.

Who does Mohammadpur suit?

  • Staff working in Dhanmondi, Mohammadpur, Shyamoli or central Dhaka, where a Gulshan commute would be long.
  • Researchers, students and development-sector workers who prefer a local neighbourhood.
  • Returning Bangladeshis and families looking for more space at a lower rent.
  • Visitors on longer projects who want a furnished, serviced flat outside the diplomatic districts.

What kind of housing is available in Mohammadpur?

Most homes are apartments in mid-rise buildings, often with more floor space for the money than in Gulshan or Banani. Many are let unfurnished to local families; furnished and serviced flats aimed at foreigners are less common. Our current listing is a three-bedroom apartment of about 2,000 sq ft, offered fully furnished with services. If you are unsure whether you need a furnished flat, read furnished vs unfurnished apartments in Dhaka.

How do you get around from Mohammadpur?

Mohammadpur connects to Mirpur Road via Asad Gate, which leads south to Dhanmondi, New Market and the older parts of the city. Getting to Gulshan, Banani or the airport means crossing central Dhaka, which can take a long time at peak hours, so this area makes most sense if your daily destinations are in the west or centre. Most foreign residents use a car with a driver or ride-hailing apps; rickshaws and CNG auto-rickshaws are common for short trips.

What is daily life like?

Everyday shopping is easy: Mohammadpur has busy local markets, including the well-known Town Hall market, plus grocery shops, pharmacies, bakeries and small restaurants. Dhanmondi next door adds cafés, restaurants, private hospitals and clinics, and Dhanmondi Lake is a popular place for walks. International supermarkets and expatriate-focused services are fewer than in Gulshan.

Pros and cons of living in Mohammadpur
