Neighbourhood guide

Short answer: Baridhara, often called the Baridhara Diplomatic Zone, is Dhaka's quietest and most security-focused address, home to many embassies and ambassadors' residences. In our current listings, apartments in Baridhara range from around BDT 150,000 a month to BDT 1,000,000 for very large furnished homes.

What is it like to live in Baridhara?

Baridhara lies just north-east of Gulshan, across Gulshan Lake. It is a planned residential enclave with wide, tree-lined roads, low traffic compared with the rest of Dhaka and a strong security presence because of the many diplomatic missions here, including the United States Embassy. The feel is residential and calm: there are few shops or restaurants inside the enclave itself, and residents usually drive to Gulshan for most errands.

Note that Baridhara DOHS is a different, separate area further north near Bashundhara. When people in the diplomatic and international community say "Baridhara", they almost always mean the Diplomatic Zone described here.

Who does Baridhara suit?

  • Diplomats and embassy staff, whose missions or security officers may prefer or require housing in the zone.
  • Senior UN, NGO and corporate staff with housing allowances that cover premium rents.
  • Families with children at the American International School Dhaka, which is in Baridhara.
  • Anyone who values quiet and is happy to drive for shopping and dining.

What kind of housing is available in Baridhara?

Baridhara has spacious apartments, many around 3,000–3,500 sq ft with three or four bedrooms, as well as very large units and some independent houses. Buildings commonly include guard rooms, CCTV, generators, staff quarters and several parking spaces; some have shared facilities such as a pool or community hall. In our listings, the largest apartment is a six-bedroom furnished home of about 7,500 sq ft on UN Road, close to the American International School Dhaka.

Many embassies and organisations have their own security criteria for residences. Our Baridhara Diplomatic Zone apartments guide and the embassy-standard security checklist explain what is commonly checked.

How much does an apartment in Baridhara cost?

Baridhara is usually the most expensive residential area in Dhaka. The figures below come from properties we list there (some are already let) and are monthly rents in Bangladeshi taka.

How do you get around from Baridhara?

Most residents travel by car with a driver. Gulshan-2 is a short drive across the lake, and Progoti Sarani on the eastern side leads north towards Bashundhara. Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport is usually 30 minutes to an hour away by car depending on traffic. Within the enclave, the roads are pleasant for walking and cycling, which is unusual in Dhaka.

What is daily life like?

Daily life is quiet. For groceries, restaurants, cafés, banks and United Hospital, residents typically go to Gulshan, which is close. Many households employ a driver, a cook or a cleaner, and larger apartments have staff quarters for this. The lake edge and the enclave's green, low-traffic roads make morning walks easier than in most parts of the city.

Pros and cons of living in Baridhara

  • Pro: quiet, green and noticeably less traffic inside the enclave.
