Short answer: getting from Dhaka airport to Gulshan means a road journey of roughly 10–15 km from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, depending on the route and your exact address. Late at night it can take around half an hour; at busy times it can take well over an hour. A pre-booked car with a driver who knows your building is the calmest option for a first arrival.
Most people moving to Dhaka for work land at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport and head straight for Gulshan, Banani or Baridhara. The distance is short, but Dhaka traffic makes the journey unpredictable, and a long-haul flight followed by a confusing kerbside is not a good start to a posting. This guide explains how the Dhaka airport to Gulshan transfer works, the realistic options, what to expect on the road and how to make the first night in a new apartment straightforward.
How far is it from Dhaka airport to Gulshan?
Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport sits on the northern side of central Dhaka, and Gulshan lies to the south of it. By road, the trip is usually somewhere around 10–15 km, depending on whether you are going to Gulshan-2 near the lake, Gulshan-1, or further towards Banani and Baridhara. Most drivers head south along Airport Road and then turn east into Gulshan; the exact turn depends on traffic and your building's location.
Distance is the easy part. Time is the variable. A late-night arrival may reach Gulshan in around 30–40 minutes. The same trip in the evening peak, in heavy rain or around public holidays can take an hour or considerably longer. Plan for the slow case and treat anything quicker as a bonus.
Does the Dhaka Elevated Expressway help?
The Dhaka Elevated Expressway runs above the Airport Road corridor and can shorten some cross-city journeys, particularly towards the southern side of the city. Whether it saves time on a trip to Gulshan depends on the ramps that are open, where you are heading and conditions on the day. Tolls apply on the expressway. In practice, an experienced local driver will choose between the expressway and the ground-level road at the time, and that judgement is worth more than any fixed rule.
What happens between landing and leaving the terminal?
- Immigration. Have your passport, visa documents, your employer's letter and your Dhaka address ready. Entry requirements depend on your nationality and purpose of travel, so confirm them with your employer or the relevant Bangladesh mission before you fly.
- Baggage reclaim. Large flights can mean a wait. Keep your baggage tags until you have all your bags.
- Customs. Declare anything you are asked to declare. If you are shipping household goods separately, keep that paperwork apart from your hand luggage.
- Money and SIM. Currency exchange and mobile operator counters are usually available in the arrivals area. A local SIM makes it far easier to call your driver or landlord, and ride-hailing apps need a working data connection.
- Meeting your driver. Access to the terminal for people meeting passengers is often restricted, so pickups commonly happen at a meeting point outside the building. Agree the exact spot, the driver's name and a phone or WhatsApp number before you fly.
What are the options for getting from the airport to Gulshan?
| Option | Best for | Things to know |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-booked car with driver | First arrivals, families, late-night landings, lots of luggage | Driver tracks the flight, meets you at an agreed point and knows the building. Agree the price in advance. |
| Hotel, employer or landlord pickup | Anyone whose accommodation is already arranged | Often the simplest choice. Confirm who is coming and how to reach them. |
| Ride-hailing app | Light travellers who already have a local SIM and data | Uber and Pathao operate in Dhaka. Pickup points at the airport can be confusing, and fares rise at busy times. |
| Airport taxi or car-hire counter | Travellers without a booking | Counters are usually found in the arrivals area. Agree the fare and destination before you set off. |
Is a Hazrat Shahjalal airport to Gulshan taxi easy to get?
Usually, yes. Taxis and hire cars are available, but the experience varies. Agree the fare before you get in, have your address written down in English and, ideally, in Bengali, and keep your phone charged so you can share your location with someone who is expecting you. If a stranger offers to carry your bags or find you a car, a polite "no, thank you" is enough.
Why a pre-booked pickup is worth it on your first arrival
On a first trip, you do not yet know which roads are normal, which building gate to use or how the guard at your new address will react to an unfamiliar car at midnight. A driver who has been briefed on the building removes all of that. It also matters with children, pets, heavy suitcases or a flight that lands in the early hours.
If you are staying in one of our serviced apartments, airport pick-up is one of the things we can arrange as part of your move-in. For longer-term furnished lets, we can usually coordinate a pickup too, so you go directly from arrivals to your front door.
How does key handover work if I land late?
Late arrivals are common, and the handover can be planned around them. When Rent Property arranges your apartment, we agree in advance who will meet you at the building, where the keys will be and which guard is on duty. Typically, the flat is checked, cleaned and made up before you arrive, with the air-conditioning, water and generator back-up tested.
If you land late at night, a short handover is usually enough: keys, Wi-Fi password, how the generator switchover works and an emergency contact. The full walk-through and the signed inventory can take place the next day, in daylight, when you can check each item properly.
First-night checklist for a new apartment in Gulshan
- Keys and access: main door, building gate, any card or fob, and the name of the guard on duty.
- Power: where the distribution board is and what the generator covers in an outage.
- Water: which tap has drinking water or where the filter or bottled water is kept.
- Air-conditioning: remote controls present and working in each bedroom.
- Internet: Wi-Fi name and password, and who to call if it drops.
- Emergency contacts: your landlord or agent, building management and your employer's security contact.
- Essentials: linen, towels, toilet paper and something for breakfast. If you will arrive late, ask in advance whether a few basics can be left for you.
Where should you ask to be dropped?
Gulshan's road numbers are not always sequential, and several buildings can share similar names. Give your driver the full address, the road and house number, and a landmark such as Gulshan-1 or Gulshan-2 circle or the lake. A map pin shared on WhatsApp is often the most reliable instruction of all.
If your posting is in Banani or Baridhara instead, the airport journey is broadly similar. Our area pages for Gulshan, Banani and Baridhara describe each district in more detail.
Arriving before your apartment is ready
If your long-term flat is not yet ready, a short stay in a furnished or serviced apartment is often more comfortable than a hotel for anything longer than a few weeks. See our guide to short-term furnished rentals in Dhaka, and use our moving to Dhaka checklist to plan the weeks either side of your flight.
