Short answer: finding a pet friendly apartment in Dhaka is possible, but permission is decided owner by owner and building by building, not by a city-wide rule. Cats and small dogs are the easiest to place; large dogs usually need a ground-floor unit, a garden or an independent house. Always get the pet permission written into the lease before you pay the deposit.
Many expatriate families arrive in Dhaka with a cat or a dog, and most of them do find a home that accepts it. What surprises newcomers is that there is no standard answer. One landlord in Gulshan will say yes without hesitation; the owner of the flat next door will refuse. This guide explains how pet permission actually works in Dhaka rentals, how to ask for it, what to put in the lease and how to keep an animal comfortable through the heat and the monsoon.
Is it hard to find a pet friendly apartment in Dhaka?
It is not hard, but it takes more searching than an ordinary flat hunt. Two separate parties usually have a say:
- The owner of the flat. Most apartments in Dhaka are individually owned, so each owner decides for their own unit. Some owners are relaxed about pets, particularly those who have let to foreign tenants before. Others worry about scratched floors, stained furniture or smells.
- The building committee or owners' association. Many apartment buildings are run by a committee of flat owners. Some committees have written rules on pets, lift use or common areas; many have no written rule at all and decide case by case. A committee can be stricter than an individual owner, so it is worth asking about both.
Attitudes vary for cultural and practical reasons. Cats are widely accepted in Bangladesh. Dogs are more mixed: some residents are uncomfortable sharing a lift with a dog, and guards may not be used to them. None of this is a reason to give up. It simply means you should raise the subject early and politely rather than hoping to deal with it after moving in.
How should you ask a landlord about pets?
Be specific and ask before you view, not after you have fallen for the flat. A clear request is far more likely to succeed than a vague one. Give the owner:
- The species, breed, age and approximate weight of each animal.
- Whether it is neutered, vaccinated and house-trained.
- Who will care for it during the day (you, a helper or a dog walker).
- How you plan to protect the flat: rugs, a covered sofa, a scratching post, regular professional cleaning.
- Your employer's details, if you are on a corporate or organisational lease. Owners are often more comfortable with a tenant whose employer stands behind the lease.
When Rent Property handles a search, we raise the pet question with the owner at the shortlist stage, so you do not waste a viewing on a flat that will say no. Our listing data does not record a pet policy for each property, because in practice the answer depends on the owner's view of your particular animal.
What should a pet clause in a Dhaka lease say?
Verbal permission is not enough. Owners change their minds, flats are sold and building committees change. Ask for a short clause in the rental agreement that covers:
- Which animals are permitted, by species and number (for example, "one neutered domestic cat" or "one dog of about 15 kg").
- Common-area rules: leash in the lobby and lift, no animals in the rooftop or garden area unless agreed, prompt clean-up.
- Damage and cleaning: that the tenant will repair pet damage and arrange a professional clean of floors, curtains and upholstery at move-out.
- Replacement animals: whether a new pet during the tenancy needs fresh consent.

Will I pay a higher deposit for a pet?
Possibly. A security deposit of two to three months' rent is already common in Dhaka. Some owners accept a pet without changing that; others ask for an extra amount or a specific commitment to professional cleaning at the end of the tenancy. There is no fixed market rate for a "pet deposit", so treat it as a point to negotiate and agree it in writing. A dated, photographed inventory at handover protects you here more than anything else: it shows what condition the flat was in before your animal arrived. Which types of property work best with pets?
| Property type | Good for | Things to check |
|---|---|---|
| Upper-floor apartment | Cats, small dogs | Balcony safety netting, lift rules, generator backup for air-conditioning |
| Ground-floor or garden unit | Dogs that need outdoor access | Drainage in the monsoon, mosquitoes, boundary wall and gate |
| Rooftop or duplex with terrace | Cats and small dogs | Shade, heat on the roof slab, secure railings |
| Independent house | Large dogs, several pets | Garden fencing, guard's comfort with the animal, higher rent |
| Serviced apartment | Short stays, often restricted | Many operators do not accept pets; ask first |
Independent houses appear only occasionally in our listings, in areas such as Gulshan, Baridhara and Uttara, and they rent at the upper end of the market. Browse current homes on our properties page, or read about Baridhara and Gulshan, where larger family homes and greener roads are more common.
How do you find a vet in Dhaka?
Veterinary care is available in Dhaka, including private clinics that treat cats and dogs. Quality and facilities vary, so ask other pet owners at your embassy, school or workplace which clinics they use, and register with one soon after you arrive rather than in an emergency. Check whether the clinic can make house calls, whether it offers after-hours contact and where you would go for surgery or imaging. Keep your pet's vaccination record and any microchip details in both paper and digital form.
How do you care for a pet in Dhaka's heat and monsoon?
- Heat. Dhaka is hot and humid for much of the year. Keep at least one room cool, and check that the building's generator carries air-conditioning during power cuts, not only lifts and lights. Walk dogs early in the morning and after dark, and remember that pavements and roof slabs get very hot.
- Monsoon. Heavy rain brings standing water, which means more mosquitoes and a higher risk of skin and paw problems. Dry your pet thoroughly after walks and ask your vet about parasite prevention.
- Street animals. Many neighbourhoods have community dogs and cats. Keep your pet on a leash, keep vaccinations current and avoid confrontations on walks.
- Food and supplies. Pet food and supplies are sold in Dhaka, but specific imported brands may be hard to find or expensive. Consider bringing a supply of any specialised diet to cover the first weeks.

How do you bring a pet into Bangladesh?
Import requirements for animals can change, and they differ by species and by the country you are travelling from. Before you book anything, check the current rules with the relevant Bangladeshi authorities and with your airline, and ask your employer's relocation team whether they have a recent example. Typical items people are asked about include vaccination records (especially rabies), a health certificate from a vet in the departure country, microchip details and the airline's own crate and booking rules. Airlines often limit how many animals travel per flight and may restrict pets during the hottest months, so plan early.
Most animals arrive at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. Arrange a short-term place to stay that accepts your pet for the first nights, because a hotel may not. If your employer is arranging your move, our corporate relocation service can build the pet requirement into the housing brief from day one.
